what weapons were used to defend/attack castles
Each group of attackers used elaborate weaponry and tactics to lay siege to castles. Wealthy soldiers used weapons like sliver shields and chain mail, where an average foot soldier was lucky to get a wooden shield to use. Gunpowder and cannons were introduced in Europe in the 1300's and made the purpose of castles obsolete. Animals such as watchdogs, turkeys, and geese were also used. Each type of animal acted as sentries. Dogs were also tamed to be vicious and defensive in battle. The simplest weapons were rocks to throw at castles. Longbows were a popular choice and more effective on open battle fields. Crossbows were introduced and used for attacking and defending. Broadswords, spears, and double bladed battleaxes were used in hand to hand combat.
